There are benefits to Martial Arts training for all ages. Our preschool program, called “Mighty Pandas”, is designed for students ages 3-5 yrs. In this classes we focus on developing skills for listening and appropriate classroom behavior in a fun and play-filled environment.

For our “Little Dragons” Program, ages 5-8 yrs, we focus on developing good manners, improved listening and motor skills through various Martial Arts games and training in a non-competitive atmosphere with incredible benefits.

Our “Roaring Tigers” Program, ages 9-12 yrs, our focus is on discipline, self-confidence, courage and a non quitting spirit.

The “Shaolin Warriors” Program, ages 13-15 yrs is beyond simply learning self-defense skills, and maintaining or improving physical fitness, students will develop: focus, discipline, respect, self-esteem, goal setting, and confidence.

And for the Adults Program, Martial Arts’ training is one of the best ways to improve your fitness, strength and flexibility. It also a great way to reduce your stress level, help improve your self confidence, self esteem and the give you the ability to learn practical self defense skills.

Shaolin Kung Fu is a Chinese based system of self defence. While self defence efficiency is important, Shaolin Kung Fu is not just a fighting art but an art also deeply based on personal development.

At Six Harmonies Martial Arts, we teach a combined system of Shaolin Kung Fu (Chinese), Jiujitsu (Brazillian) and Thai Fitness Kick Boxing. Our carefully constructed curriculum, developed and continuously refined over the last 20 years, incorporates the most practical aspects of a variety of the Martial Arts, to provide the most effective training available. These include traditional Chinese forms, blocking techniques, hand techniques and various self defense leg techniques. We’ve also incorporated weapons instruction along with some of the throws and ground defense elements of Judo and Jiu Jitsu, so that our students have a broad exposure to the Martial Arts.

At SHMA, our programs and class schedules are specifically designed to meet the needs of today’s active families. Because each students training schedule may be different due to age or availability, our basic program is based on between 1 to 2 times per week. As the student progresses through their training our Int/Advanced Black Belt Programs allow the student to attend classes as often as 3 to 4 times per week.

We have designed our programs to continually reward and motivate students. Students are given numerous incentives in the classroom and we have a Martial Arts Plus Awards Program where students can to earn unlimited stars of achievement for exceptional effort in areas of reading, manners and monthly activities. Our belt system also encourages consistent attendance. Once the student has attended 3 classes they are rewarded with a coloured stripe for their belt. At the completion of  reaching all the required stripes a new belt is awarded. This way students are able to set and achieve new goals.

Our curriculum was also carefully designed to give students fresh material and challenging skills to learn at each belt level that will excite and motivate them at every step. Finally, we also conduct periodic belt & goal reviews where we sit down with the parents & students to discuss progress and reinforce positive goal setting.

You will know that your child is ready to promote to their next belt level when they have received between 4-8 black/red stripes on their belt depending on which program they are currently training in. These stripes are awarded for attendance, concentration, focus, athletic ability and Martial Arts skill. Students who are ready to be promoted to the next belt level will then notify by their instructor of their upcoming belt promotion date. Belt Promotions are held every quarter through out the year.

Belt Promotion days are an opportunity for students to show off their new skills. Shifu Stuart, founder of SHMA, attends and promotes all of the graduating students and closely follows their progress at the academy. We encourage families and friends to attend in support of students and to help them celebrate their achievements. Feel free to take videos or pictures when you come along.

Forms in Chinese are a series of predetermined movements combined so they can be practiced as one linear set of movements against an imaginary set of opponents. Today, many consider forms to be one of the most important practices in Chinese Martial Arts. Forms gradually build up a practitioner’s flexibility, internal and external strength, speed, stamina, and teach balance and coordination. Many styles also contain weapon forms of various lengths and types. Forms are meant to be both practical, usable, and applicable as well as promoting flow, meditation, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Teachers are often heard to say “train your form as if you were sparring and spar as if it were a form.”

Yes, we encourage parents &  family members to be there to watch your children for up to 75% of the time. Get involved, be your child’s No. 1 fan and cheer leader. Attend Promotions and bring friends, your child has worked hard, celebrate with them.

Try to avoid being a drop off parent. It’s a well known fact that kids who drop out of Martial Arts typically have parents who don’t take the time to get involved.

Start by finding the center of the belt and hold it up to your front. Wrap one end of the belt all the way around the body and back to the front. Wrap the other end around on top of the first piece, and bring it back to the front.

Next, take the end that is on the outside; bring it underneath both pieces of the belt, from the bottom side up to the top. Take this piece and bring it back to the outside, wrap it over the top of the other end, and then thread it through the loop that was just created, from the bottom to the top. Finally, pull both ends straight to the sides to tighten.
